Contentin from top to bottom

Whatever the weather, the Cotentin is one of those unmissable destinations when it comes to discovering Normandy. At its heart, Valognes is remarkable for its architectural heritage.  It is also known as the “Norman Versailles” in memory of its intellectual and social role. From the church of Saint-Malo to the abbey of Notre-Dame-de-Protection, via the Hôtel Beaumont, the town abounds in vestiges of the past, often renovated in keeping with tradition. The town is also ideal for walking and cycling tours.

Do you prefer coastal towns? The good news is that Valognes is located about twenty kilometres from Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. Its artificial harbour, the second largest in the world, is well worth a visit. A visit to its town centre also promises a pleasant time. But the other must-see is La Cité de la Mer: a visit to its monumental aquarium and the submarine Le Redoutable will not fail to amaze young and old. For more iodine-filled air, explore the Cap de la Hague with a stop at the Goury lighthouse and the Nez de Jobourg. You’ll also find Europe’s highest cliffs, located at the crossroads of breathtaking land and sea scenery.

Other ideas for exploring the coastline:

– Stop off at the harbour of Port-Bail-sur-Mer, a pretty coastal village
– Explore the Baie des Veys
– Sleep at Cap Levi
– Do water sports on the beach or in the Sciotot cove…

→ For inland enthusiasts, some towns and villages are also worth a look: Bricquebec-en-Contentin, Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, Sainte-Mère-Église, etc.

Cultural outings

The Pays d’Art et d’Histoire du Cotentin is a must-see area for its natural, historical and architectural heritage, and also offers a wide range of cultural visits for the whole family: a visit to the island of Tatihou, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the discovery of the various nature reserves on the peninsula, a visit to the Ravalet castle, its greenhouses and garden, a visit to the Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Eglise, or to the Liberation Museum in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin…
